Growing Up in Public: Coming of Age in a Digital World

This is an incredible resource for parents and adults who support people born after 2000. The main thing I liked was the approach of non-shame when approaching these topics. The author essentially uses the logic of “teach your kids to use the internet safely (like swimming), because they WILL use it”. It takes courage for parents to have these conversations, and this book will support you to have them. As a therapist I now talk to parents and young adults about many of these concepts, especially around academics and perfectionism.

I especially loved the authors take on using internet / digital interactions as lessons of consent. We have all experienced someone posting private information or sharing a photo, or feeling surveilled. The trial and error of the internet is full of opportunity for conversations about respecting others privacy and asking for consent before making decisions. This book will ask you to reflect on how you model these values in your home, which I think is SO GOOD !!!
