The Great Shadow: A History of How Sickness Shapes What We Do, Think, Believe, and Buy
This book is history and philosophy of modern western illness. There were things in this book that will affirm many Americans experiences, especially around mental illness, responsibility and germ precautions, and health morality.
The topics assist in a reflection of how cultural norms about illness and germs have shifted and become what they are today. I loved the writing style. It was lyrical and felt like you were floating over history and appearing in homes to understand the context of illness at that point. I appreciated the authors moments of shared humanity and positioning in time (post 2020).
